While interviewing Mark England, the owner of Dolcetti Gelato, we also discussed the constant difficulties of running a small business. He talks about his experience and gives his advice for those interested in running their own small business.
England talks about challenges he faced by saying, “Getting it started the first few years and the pandemic were really hard times… Having broken machines.”
When asked what advice he would give to those wanting to start a small business in Salt Lake, England said, “Don’t.You have better odds in Vegas, especially if it is a food industry.”
England continues on to say, “You can have the best food in the world, but if you’re in the wrong location, or have the wrong sign or have bad parking or bad staff… you can do nine out of ten right and the tenth thing wrong and that can torpedo your business.” England continues to say “Nothing is guaranteed.”
England talks about how he has found success by saying, “You have to have a real stomach for a lot of hard, long days. In the end, if you succeed, it is really gratifying.” He continues to say, “There are very few things more gratifying than creating something and having it appreciated by people.”
England has a unique perspective as a business and an artist by saying, “It is what I tell people that want to be an artist, don’t do it unless you have to. If there’s something else you can do, do that. If you have to do it, great… But if there’s something that you have to do, do that.” He also said, “Unless it’s a part of your soul and you have to do this and you’re willing to sacrifice and make it happen for you. And then when you do, people will know it.”
