The story of jewelry shouldn’t end once you decide to stop wearing it.
Winter Chamberlain redefines vintage, stylish handmade jewelry with her brand Hiver Chic (pronounced “E-vair Chic”). She transforms forgotten or broken pieces into timeless accessories by upcycling earrings, rings, necklaces, and bracelets. Every design is crafted with creativity, sentiment, and a touch of elegance.
Chamberlain’s passion for creating jewelry started in sixth grade when her grandmother bought her a jewelry-making kit. “As a kid, you lose a lot of jewelry. I had a bunch of lost earrings lying around my house. I saw that and I said I didn’t want to throw them away. I wanted to repurpose them, so I made them into a charm bracelet,” Chamberlain said.
“My mom was an art major at the U and she had a bunch of art stuff in our basement. I went down there looking for a certain type of wire. I used that wire to make the rings and taught myself with a lot of trial and error. They’re not easy to make at the start, but you get more well-versed through the years,” she continued.
A large portion of the upcycled jewelry she creates is graciously passed down from her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. “They have a huge jewelry collection. They don’t wear a lot of that stuff anymore, and it gets passed down to me,” Chamberlain shared.
Her hobby quickly evolved into a business when her friends and track teammates began asking if she sold the rings she wore. She said, “People like to have jewelry that stays with them for a long time. I like making quality jewelry for people…”
“I did my cousin’s matching flower rings for her wedding and for her bridesmaids based on the colors of their bridesmaid’s dresses,” she stated. Not only has Chamberlain’s jewelry been showcased at a wedding, but she’s created unique pieces for models and her Hiver Chic booth at the University of Utah’s Fashion in Business fashion show.
“I want to turn my jewelry business into a fashion label, long-term. I know how to sew and it’s like the same thing with jewelry,” Chamberlain said. “I like taking things that I find at thrift stores or things my friends and family don’t wear anymore. I upcycle them into new products and I’d continue with my jewelry as well. I think it’s cool to repurpose things.”
Chamberlain seamlessly integrates strategies from her marketing classes to expand her business and build a brand where every piece of jewelry tells a story. “With my marketing degree, I feel like I’m figuring out how to target that audience and how to market my brand in the way that I want to,” she said. “Accounting and finance have taught me to value the price of my work.”
Chamberlain currently sells her pieces on Instagram and interested customers can send a DM for specific pieces they want to purchase. Check out Hiver Chic on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/hiver.chic/
