Many University of Utah students are approaching the final year of their undergraduate studies, and post-graduation plans are becoming a key focus. Mechanical engineering student Ian Davidson shared his goals for when he graduates this coming spring.
“I want to hopefully work at a very exciting job,” Davidson stated. “I hate a boring job. I have a high bar for excitement because of all the past jobs I’ve worked… I think I can hook up a good engineering job when I graduate.”
Davidson has spent his time pursuing a bachelor’s degree through the Mechanical Engineering Department while balancing being an airman for the United States Air Force.
“I’m so excited to graduate… I want to find a good engineering job as soon as I can and wait no longer than a month. I’d rather take a low-paying job than wait for the perfect job.”
“My GPA isn’t competitive, but I think I can overcome that with my work experience and good connections…You have to collaborate with people if you want to be liked, especially as an engineer; it’s a good field with good people.”
“It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as the people you work with are good,” Davidson said about the mechanical engineering department. “All engineers are fun and good to work with.”
“My senior design project has me working with people outside of school. I feel very prepared to take on any task. I have so many good ideas and so little money. [With a job] I will make something beautiful.”
About his financial plan, Davidson said, “Hopefully I can use my mechanical engineering knowledge to get a high-paying job… I am going to use 90% of the money I make to invest, and 10% for fun. Investing in crazy ideas that I have. Go complete high-risk high reward as much as possible.”
“I want to take as many risks as I can handle. I’m going to piss off a lot of people trying. I can’t wait to get some investment money. There are big things happening.”
